Samsung Note 2 GT-N7100 Philz Recovery & Root

Samsung recently rolled out the much-awaited Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the international variant of Galaxy Note 2 (GT-N7100) with a handful of improvements including faster UI performance, graphical enhancements and updated apps alongside a bunch of new features including Samsung's KNOX security.
Those who have already installed the latest official firmware from Samsung and want to restore root access on their device can follow our step-by-step guide given below.
Note: Rooting is essential to install third-party root apps, latest custom ROMs and system tweaks for optimum system performance.
IBTimes UK reminds its readers that it will not be held liable for any damage to device during or after root installation. Users are advised to proceed at their own risk.
Pre-requisites
1. Install necessary USB Drivers for Galaxy Note 2 N7100 on the computer.
2. USB Debugging Mode should be enabled on the phone by navigating to Settings >> Developer Options.
3. Back up your important data to avoid potential data loss during root installation.
4. Ensure the phone is factory unlocked (not locked to any specific carrier).
5. Verify Galaxy Note 2 has at least 80 percent battery charge.
6. The rooting tool provided in this guide is only compatible with Galaxy Note 2 (GT-N7100). Do not attempt installing it on incorrect variants as it may brick the device. Verify the model number of the Galaxy Note 2 by navigating to Settings >> About Phone.

  1. Copy the SuperSU update.zip file to your Galaxy Note 2.

  4. Now connect your device to the computer via USB cable.
  5. Wait until the "Added!" message appears in Odin and the ID:COM box turns light blue.
  6. Click the AP button and choose philz_touch_6.26.6-n7100.tar.md5 file.

"Samsung Knox has been detected. This might limit root capabilities and cause annoying popups. Try to disable KNOX."
Hit OK. You will now see the message KNOX has been successfully disabled. To further verify root access, download and install Root Checker app from Google Play store and run it.
Troubleshooting (courtesy XDA Developers)
Problem#1: If you keep getting SuperSu has stopped notifications constantly then follow these steps to fix:
  • Uninstall SuperSu (Dont worry you won't lose root access)
  • Now download SuperSu again from playstore
  • Doing this installs SuperSu on /data/app partition where it won't get stopped by KNOX
Problem#2: If Fix no1 doesn't work for you then try this out:
  • Download Terminal Emulator from the playstore.
  • Launch it and type the following code:
su
pm disable com.sec.knox.seandroid
Note: This will disable the Knox apps which prevent SuperSu from running
Problem#3: If none of the above steps work to disable Knox. Then try the following:
  • Using any Root Explorer go to /system / app & / system / priv-app and delete all the apps having the word Knox in it. Also delete their corresponding odex files.
  • This should work without fail. But doing this modifies your system partition and you may lose OTA functionality temporarily.

HOW TO RESTORE STOCK CSL BOOT ANIMATION
thanks to GreenJellyBean

[quote=GreenJellyBean,Mar 22 2011, 02:41 PM]
ok, i just successfully changed the bootanimation.
FYI, I am still using stock 2.1 and I manage to change the bootanimation to something else and change back to CSL stock animation with the steps below.

1. Find a boot animation, in my example I am going to use one I dload off the net (see attachment below bootanimation.zip).
2. You phone must be rooted and has Super Manager (any Root Explorer will do).
3. Connect your phone to usb, mount the card and copy the bootanimation.zip to the root of the card.
4. Unplug USB, start Root Explorer and cut the bootanimation.zip (you will need to paste it into another folder later).
5. Browse to "/hidden/data/Power-on Animation" folder, you must have root access granted to root Super Manager to see this folder, it is hidden by default).
6. There is a existing bootanimation.zip there, rename it to existing bootanimation-csl.zip to backup
7. Paste the bootanimation.zip you copied in step 4.
8. Shutdown your phone.
9. Turn it back on and voila, new bootanimation.

p/s: fyi there is a shell script in "/hidden/data/Power-on Animation" that automatically copies the bootanimation.zip to /local/data. Earlier I was trying to paste into /local/data and it kept getting replaced.

hope this will help you all claim warranty :) or custom rom freely without worrying about warranty.

Not Required.

The latest versions 3+ of ClockworkMod Recovery have been out for a while now but at the moment, there is no direct way to install them to your Android device using ROM Manager. Fortunately, a quick hack allows you to change that and easily install any version of ClockworkMod Recovery to your device directly from ROM Manager.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with ClockworkMod Recovery, it is a custom recovery image for your Android device that lets you perform advanced installation, recovery and maintenance operations on your device. You can find more details at our coverage of what is ClockworkMod Recovery and how to install it.
The latest major release of ClockworkMod recovery is 3 and while it is available for several Android devices, trying to install ClockworkMod recovery through ROM Manager will result in the latest 2.x recovery being installed instead of 3.x. While version 2 works great for most purposes, version 3 is required to install CyanogenMod 7 nightly ROMs on your device that we have been featuring here lately.
Fortunately, with a quick file rename hack, you can trick ROM Manger into installing ClockworkMod Recovery 3.x on your device. Here is the complete method:
Requirements:
Method:
  1. Download ClockworkMod Recovery 3.x for your device and copy it to your SD card.
Note: Make sure that it is in .img format and in case the file you downloaded was zipped, extract the .img file from it first and use that rather than the zip file.
  2. Launch ROM Manager and tap the first option that says ‘Flash ClockworkMod Recovery’ and confirm the name of your device. This will install the latest 2.x version of ClockworkMod recovery on your device.
  3. Launch File Manager, browse to the location where you copied the recovery in step 1 and copy it.
  4. Now browse to sdcard > clockworkmod > download > koush.tandtgaming.com > recoveries.
  5. There will be a file with a name similar to recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img. The part of the version number after ‘2’ could be different and instead of ‘vision’, it might say something else depending on your phone model.
  6. Rename that file by adding something to the end of the extension that you will later remember. We added .bak to it and it is now named recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img.bak.
  7. Now paste the 3.x version recovery there that you copied earlier in Step 3.
  8. Rename this file to the name the previous file had before you renamed it in the last step. This is very important, as in case of the name being even slightly different, this trick will not work. In our case, we renamed it to recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img
  9. Close File Manager and launch ROM Manager again.
  10. Tap on the first option again to flash ClockworkMod recovery. It will ask for the name of your device again, which you should confirm. Wait patiently while the recovery is flashed and you’re done.
You will still see the previous version of recovery in ROM Manager but in fact it is the new 3.x version with that old file name. From now onwards, booting into recovery will get you to ClockworkMod 3.x recovery with the orange text and you can use it to flash CyanogenMod 7 ROMs to your device.
Note: Due to the number of Android devices for which ClockworkMod Recovery 3.x is available, we can’t give all the download links here. This is also due to the fact that the official ClockworkMod Recovery website is under construction and we have to search a lot to look for the recovery’s yet unreleased 3.x version for many devices. For now, you will just have to search for a version for your device on your own. We will soon be featuring a mirror download list of the latest ClockworkMod Recovery 3.x versions for all the devices that we can find and will then update this post with a link to that list, so stay tuned

How To Set Up DiGi Broadband

Hi, I'm writing this guide for the benefit of those who want to try applying for DiGi Broadband but don't want the hassle of bringing it to a DiGi Service Center for installation. I faced the same problem and there was nothing here to guide me so I had to learn it the hard way, but now that I've succeeded in connecting, I'd like to share the method with you.

1. Apply for DiGi Broadband by calling DiGi (016-2990000), assuming you are on DiGi Postpaid and are the primary subscriber.
2. Request for the settings to your phone, accept and install, set as default.
3. Go to your phone web settings (in the case of my MotoV3x, Menu-Webaccess-Web Sessions), there should be an entry "DiGi Wap" there. Under "Options", create a New websession.
4. Enter the name as "digi", GPRS APN as "diginet", leave others blank or as it is. Save and exit.
5. Go back to the websessions menu, set your new "digi" as default.

6. Connect your phone to your computer as a data connection (not as memory card - if your phone has the ability)
7. Right click My Computer, Manage
8. Left click Device Manager, under Modems, double-click your phone (Assuming you have installed all drivers for your phone on your computer)
9. Your phone modem properties should show up. Under the Advanced tab, type in this Extra Initialization Command: +cgdcont=1,"ip","diginet"
10. Click Ok and exit all windows.

11. Create a new dial-up connection (Network connections-Create a new connection-Connect to the internet-Set up my connection manually-Connect using a dial-up modem-ISP Name "DiGiNet")
12. Enter in the phone number *99#
13. Leave username and password blank, save and exit.

14. You should be able to connect to the internet smile.gif

Writing this guide by memory so if there's a step that I missed please do let me know so I can amend the guide, if you encounter problems try calling DiGi first, or you can post here I'll try to answer, but I don't come to this part of the forums very often so my response might be slow, but I'll try nonetheless. All the best!
